In this video, we are in the seaside castle town of Hagi visiting the residence of a Edo period samurai family; The Kuchiba. After the battle of Sekigahara in 1603, the Mori family, under orders from the Tokugawa Shogun relocated to Hagi from their homeland (present day Hiroshima) to build a new town and castle. The Kuchiba were one of the vassals of the Mori to accompany them on their move. This house is located within the Hagi castle complex and this gate house is the one of the finest examples of 18th century Japanese Namako style architecture in Japan. The house and gate were registered as important cultural assets in 1974.
