Mid July 2022
Dean cuts back some Gaillardia which are in the shop front to encourage new flowers to grow and make them more presentable.
It was so hot in mid July it was a struggle for everyone including the plants. Here you get a taste of what we were up against...

Short articles and videos to answer some of your questions about plant care. You can see us working behind the scenes and some of our endeavours in our plant nursery and beyond!
Calordia Fanfare Citronella. I'm just going to take some of the faded blooms off. I'm
going to take them down to the leaf access. Take off any dead leaves. Tidy it up a little
bit and then get it out yourself. Just a few more. It's very hot at the moment so we're
trying to keep them well watered. But nature's winning at the moment. A couple on there half
way through. We'll leave them there for a bit. I'll take them off at a later date. Tidy
them up. They're in the shop window so they don't want to look drab. Right, just a few
more to go. And we're there. In fact, I am going to take that one off. As you can see
we've got some new buds coming through. So they'll be through hopefully any day soon.
Give it a bit of rain really but it's not going to be happening any time soon. Right.
Pretty happy with that. A couple more there. Take that one out now. I think that's it.
Looks a bit better doesn't it? Yeah. Lovely.
As you all know, it's the 19th of July and we're in England and we're on the outskirts
of Bristol. We're having a heatwave. So it is like standing in the entrance to an oven
when you open the oven door and Dean's beckoning me down. Let's go see. But yeah, it's a real
challenge keeping all these plants well and happy. They're all wilting. Thankfully he's
got a really good system. But I think he wants to show us something down here. It's so hot
Dean! How are you coping? Have a look. What have you got? 50 Celsius, 120 Fahrenheit.
Oh my God, that's terrific. Can you see the water running down? Is that to cool them?
Yeah, it's just waterers and plants outside. How have you been managing to keep everything
watered? Well I just try my best with a sprinkler and then a bit of spot watering as well. Just
doing the best we can really. It's non-stop basically. And how are you doing Dean? I drink
loads as well, so just keep hydrated and just do the best we can basically. And not rush
around as quickly probably. No, and I'm going to go out with Polly now. Right, I'm going
to follow you out and just see where you've got your sprinkler going. Brilliant. I think
I'll switch off and I'm going to get in there now. Bye. Dean! Oh, it's great. Yeah, that's
really good. These poor little plants were really needing it. I'm just going to fan them
back a bit and just take out any dead ones and then hopefully build their reserves up
for next year. Brilliant. And they're the ones we restarted earlier. Great. These shoots
have popped up in the last week because I started some last week.
