ExclusiveMillard Fillmore: Last of the Whigs
The second vice-president to ascend to the presidency after his running mate's death, Millard Fillmore became the thirteenth President of the United States sixteen months into Zachary Taylor's four-year term. As a Northerner with Southern sympathies on the issue of slavery, Fillmore endeavored to keep peace in the nation and avoid the impending Civil War, which he temporarily achieved by supporting the five-part Compromise of 1850. Despite his moderate views, he failed to gain nomination for a full term of his own, making him the last Whig president to hold office before the party crumbled.
