The U.S.-China trade war continues to intensify, with China suspending exports of several rare earth minerals and magnets, threatening to disrupt global supplies of critical components, including those for the automotive supply chain. However, a 2023 Tesla patent could potentially overcome China’s rare earth export restrictions, helping to address the U.S.’s supply chain vulnerabilities.

The patent introduces a manufacturing process for electric motors likened to “minimally invasive surgery.” By drilling precise grooves 0.2 to 1.5 millimeters deep into the magnet structure and adding specific dopants, the process significantly reduces rare earth usage while maintaining the required magnetic performance and streamlining production.
