KINGSTON – Ulster County has been recertified as a Silver-Level Climate Smart Community, a statewide recognition of the county’s continued leadership to combat climate change and protect communities from, the impacts of changes already occurring.
Ulster was the first county in the state to achieve Silver certification, the highest level of recognition in the state Department of Environmental Conservation’s Climate Smart Communities Certification program.
There are presently 198 certified Climate Smart Communities in the state.
“In this time of skyrocketing energy prices, we are seeing not just climate benefits but also the financial benefits of reducing our costly dependence on fossil fuels and generating more of our energy from clean local sources,” said County executive Jen Metzger.
“We’re saving hundreds of thousands of dollars in operational costs cost from county residents in solar, building efficiency improvements, and electrification of our buses and county vehicles,” she said.
Ulster County joins local governments recognized this year for advancing climate action and sustainability, including the Town of Gardiner, which received a new silver certification, Town of Rochester, which received a new bronze certification; and Town of Woodstock, which received a bronze recertification.
