NEW YORK- The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is urging residents and outdoor enthusiasts to use caution with campfires and other outdoor burning as dry conditions increase the risk of wildfires across the state.

DEC officials say recent wildfires have been linked to unattended or improperly extinguished campfires. Campers and hunters are encouraged to avoid campfires when possible and make sure any fires are completely extinguished with water before leaving.

Anyone who spots a wildfire should call 911. Officials also warn that smoke from brushfires in the southern United States is contributing to increased particulate matter in the air.
