MID-HUDSON – Three Mid-Hudson Valley State Assembly members are all seeking re-election and they are all running without opposition.
Paula Kay is a Democrat representing most of Sullivan and a small portion of Orange County. Karl Brabenec is a Republican representing western Orange County and Brian Maher is a Republican who represents a small portion of northern Orange County. The remainder of his district includes portions of Sullivan, Ulster and Delaware counties.
Maher explained the lack of opposition in all three races, saying there is little left-wing or right-wing rhetoric from any of the three incumbents.
“We generally like each other – Democrat or Republican, Paula, myself and Karl – and when people see that, and even the party apparatus seeks that, they tend to steer away from some of those elections that you might have put way more resources if you run in a bunch of elections as opposed to putting them all in one,” Maher said.
Despite their lack of a competitor, all three say they run their campaigns as if they have a challenger.
