KINGSTON – With daylight saving time ending Sunday, resulting in sunsets arriving before 5 p.m., Ulster County is stepping up traffic safety for Pedestrian Safety Month through the “Be Safe, Be Seen” campaign. The county is handing out 1,000 free reflective yellow vests at sites countywide to ensure walkers and bicyclists stay visible and safe during darker afternoon commutes.
County Executive Jen Metzger explains.
“We have had way too many pedestrian deaths and crashes. What makes all the difference in the world is if the driver can see the pedestrian.”
Yellow reflective vests will help reduce injuries. “We’re making a thousand vests available for our residents, she said. “We’ve distributed them to different locations around the county.”
She stresses that being visible on the roads is everything. “They catch headlights. You really stand out. And they’re free for the taking.”
Locations where you can get the free vests are:
- Rondout Municipal Center (at both the Marbletown and Rosendale Town Clerk offices),
- Cragsmoor Free Library,
- Trudy Center,
- Ulster County DMV Office,
- New Paltz Village Hall,
- Phoenicia Library, 48 Main Street, Phoenicia
- Saugerties Town Hall, 4 High Street, Saugerties
- Veteran Services entrance / Development Court Building #2, 2 Development Ct, Ulster
- Shawangunk Town Hall, 14 Central Ave, Wallkill
