KINGSTON – Harambee Kingston conducted a fundraiser Saturday at the Venue on Washington Avenue for the Pine Street African Burial Ground Memorial Grounds, which received National Historic Designation, December 18, 2025.
Harambee is hoping to raise $50,000 in matching funds for the memorial at 157 Pine Street.
The burial grounds memorial design is based on the youth team’s vision that was created in a partnership with KAN Landscape Design, Inc.
“We have completed all our archaeological digs and everything that we needed to do,” said Tyrone Wilson, who helped coordinate the fundraiser for Harambee. “So right now we are focusing on implementing the youth design project.”
Wilson said the project started in 2019 when 12 high school students worked for six months to design the memorial. The $50,000 matching funds will be used to apply for a state grant in January.
“We’re at the phase where we have to raise the monies and start implementing the design the youth created,” said Wilson.
