KENT – An emergency responder’s worst nightmare is arriving on the scene of a school bus accident.
Firefighters from Carmel, Kent and Mahopac joined forces by participating in a school bus rescue training course focused on enhancing emergency response capabilities and strengthening mutual aid partnerships.
The training gave firefighters hands-on experience with the specialized techniques and procedures needed to respond safely and effectively to school bus emergencies.
Kent FD Chief Brennon Frowd explained. “These incidents can present unique challenges due to the size and construction of the vehicles, the number of potential occupants, and the complexities associated with safely removing patients.”
The day-long course emphasized the importance of technical rescue skills, effective communication, coordinated operations, and teamwork when responding to complex emergencies.
Putnam Commissioner of Emergency Services James Oster said “joint training with neighboring fire departments is an essential part of supporting a high level of emergency preparedness. By training together, firefighters become more familiar with one another’s capabilities, strengthen operational coordination, and improve their ability to work seamlessly alongside mutual aid partners during actual emergencies.”
Chief Frowd commended his department for organizing the drill: “The Kent Volunteer Fire Department remains committed to ongoing training, professional development, and collaboration with neighboring agencies to provide the highest level of emergency service to the residents and visitors of our community.”
