GARRISON- Two years ago this month, on a chilly, overcast morning, Putnam County marked a historic milestone: the groundbreaking for Hudson Valley Shakespeare’s new stage and campus in Garrison.
More than a hundred people gathered on top of a bluff that once served as a golf course at the Garrison Country Club, majestically overlooking Storm King Mountain and the Hudson River, to welcome a new era of theater arts to the area.
Gov. Kathy Hochul traveled from Albany for the event calling the groundbreaking the “most exceptional place of its kind on earth,” as construction got underway for the first purpose-built LEED platinum theater in the United States.
Former First Lady and retired U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton recently visited Putnam to present an award to architect Jeanne Gang at the annual Hudson Valley Shakespeare gala for her design of the Samuel H. Scripps Theater Center. The gala also recognized Christopher Davis for donating the 98-acre former golf course for the new campus. The organization reported raising more than $1 million at the event.
