MONTGOMERY – The Hudson Valley Regional Food Bank is launching its largest Thanksgiving effort to date, working to distribute over 500,000 meals to neighbors across 23 counties this holiday season.  Distribution sites open Saturday, November 21 at 10 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis.  Volunteers and donations are urgently needed to help pack and distribute the holiday food.

CEO Tom Nardacci said, “Last year was the largest Thanksgiving distribution in New York State.  Well, we knew we had one more world record to hit, which is the largest in the nation.”

Sullivan County Legislature Chairwoman Nadia Rajsz was emotional about food insecurity among our youth. “About a high school student going in the garbage to get food.  So, it’s hard, and we need to come together and do everything we can to provide food, which is a basic resource.”

The assistant principal of Liberty Middle School, Kaityn Rusin, was honored that Liberty was chosen as a second distribution point in Sullivan County for the first time.  “Thank you again for allowing us to participate in this and for allowing us to be a site.  We are just so grateful for this.”

Working on the front lines at Catholic Charities, Christina Saito has seen firsthand the heartbreak of families going without food.  “We work in the community. We see the need day-to-day. They come in to us telling us their story and the struggle,” she said.  “As you know, with the economy, everything rising, just going to the supermarket and getting a bag can be so much money. Imagine the people who are living on a limited income.”
