KINGSTON- The Ulster County Legislature will hold a public hearing on November 17 on proposed legislation that would prohibit the sale of synthetic 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) kratom products.
The hearing is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. during the legislature’s regular session.
Proposed Local Law No. 16 of 2026, introduced by Legislator William Murray, would restrict sales of synthetic kratom products amid concerns about potential health risks, including dependence, withdrawal symptoms, liver toxicity, and seizures.
Murray said concentrated and synthetic kratom products can contain significantly higher levels of 7-OH than naturally occurring kratom leaves. He also raised concerns about the lack of state and federal regulation and the potential presence of harmful additives and heavy metals.
The public hearing will give residents an opportunity to comment on the proposed legislation before the county considers further action.
