PUTNAM COUNTY- Motorists traversing roads in the greater Carmel, Lake Carmel, Brewster, and Southeast areas found themselves caught in massive traffic jams Friday afternoon when DOT crews repainted traffic lines along Route 6.
A routine 12-minute trip from the Putnam Courthouse in Carmel to Main Street in Brewster turned into an hour-long excursion at mid-afternoon with hundreds of vehicles caught in the nightmare.
Secondary roads also became congested as drivers sought alternate routes to avoid traffic.
Tempers flared on more than one occasion when vehicle operators sounded their horns and screamed at the flaggers.
To exacerbate the situation, the DOT decided to trim brush along Route 6 which also contributed to the traffic slowdown and stoppage.
