CARMEL – One of the most heavily used facilities in the greater Carmel area is the Carmel High School gymnasium and according to school officials, water damage to the gymnasium floor has forced the closure of the facility.

Earlier this month Superintendent Michael Plotkin reported the timing was “especially unfortunate since the damaged area must be repaired before competitive play can resume in the gym.”

On Thursday, Plotkin provided an update to residents of Putnam’s largest school district. “Based on preliminary assessments, the issue may be more widespread than initially understood and may be related to water beneath or around the building. Our architects, engineers, and maintenance staff will continue to investigate the source and scope of the problem,” said Plotkin.

Key questions remain unresolved. Plotkin said the district cannot fully determine the cause until the damaged floor is removed and the ground beneath it is examined. Only then can the district identify the necessary repairs and mitigation measures and establish a realistic timeline for completing the work.

Plotkin said gym access would remain restricted for now, and competitive play could not resume until the floor was fully evaluated and repaired.

The superintendent added that district officials recognize the “significant impact this has on our student-athletes, coaches, physical education program, and the many school and community groups that rely on this facility.”

He said the district’s goal was to “address the current damage, but also to implement proper preventive measures so that this problem does not recur. We are committed to pursuing a durable, long-term solution that protects the facility and ensures it can safely serve our students and community for years to come.”
