RHINEBECK – A suicidal man, who was stopped by a Dutchess County Sheriff’s deputy on Thursday, committed suicide by shooting himself in his car around 12:40 p.m. The subsequent investigation closed Route 9G between Routes 308 and 9 for several hours.
At approximately 11:45 a.m. on Thursday, October 22, police received a report of an armed suicidal person traveling in northern Dutchess County in the Milan/Rhinebeck area. A deputy located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop near Warren Cutlery on Route 9G, just south of Route 9 in Rhinebeck. Members of law enforcement were attempting to establish a dialogue with the man when he used a shotgun to take his own life, according to a source familiar with the investigation.
Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office Captain John Watterson said the initial investigation found no evidence that any members of law enforcement used any type of force that contributed to the man’s death.
Because police were involved in the incident, the New York State Attorney General’s Office was contacted as required by law. The New York State Attorney General’s Office is leading the investigation, assisted by the Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, and the Dutchess County Medical Examiner.
The identity of the deceased is being withheld at this time due to the nature of the circumstances and the ongoing investigation, and more information may be released at a later time.
