A North Carolina woman recently danced her way into a new century of life, surrounded by five generations of family who gathered to honor her milestone.

Mrs. Florence Godfrey, a 100-year-old native of Brookline, Massachusetts, celebrated her centennial on Friday, Oct. 9, at Waltonwood Cary Parkway, the senior living community where she resides in Cary, North Carolina. Reflecting on the joy of crossing the hundred-year threshold alongside her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchild, Mrs. Godfrey told People magazine exclusively that she could hardly comprehend reaching the historic mark:

"I can't believe it. It brings me so much joy," Mrs. Godfrey said of turning 100.

A Sacred Rhythm

For Mrs. Godfrey, movement and melody have remained constant companions throughout her life. Born and raised in Brookline, she found both joy and enduring romance on the dance floor alongside her late husband.

The couple shared a "sacred weekend ritual" of getting dressed up and heading out to dance together, senior community staff told People. That lifelong passion for movement not only provided cherished memories of her marriage, but also helped keep her vibrant and active across 10 decades.

When her 100th birthday arrived, Mrs. Godfrey honored that tradition by taking to the dance floor once again, stepping and swaying alongside multiple generations of her family while musician Caroline Gregory performed live music for the afternoon festivities. The party venue was adorned in Mrs. Godfrey's favorite color, blue, as friends and fellow residents gathered to enjoy cake, apple pie and conversation.

Asked what reassuring words of guidance she would offer her younger self after living through a century of change, Mrs. Godfrey offered a gentle reminder: "Things will always turn out okay."

Five Generations of Love

The milestone gathering proved that life had turned out far better than merely okay. Droves of relatives traveled to express their affection, representing five complete generations.

Among the attendees were Mrs. Godfrey's three children — Joe, Arthur and Jean — along with seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Seeing her legacy fill the room with music and laughter was the greatest gift the centenarian could receive.

"The best part is getting to celebrate with my family," Mrs. Godfrey told People. "I am still most grateful for my loving family."

Her family members expressed deep appreciation for the community that helped bring the reunion to life, saying in a statement:

"Our family is grateful for how much love and effort went into making this day so special for our Mom. Everyone at Waltonwood is family, and we're grateful that she has such a special place to call home. Having everyone here means everything to us."

Secrets to Longevity

While regular physical activity and a lifetime on the dance floor have supported her health, Mrs. Godfrey credits her longevity to maintaining an open, forgiving and lighthearted disposition toward life.

"Always follow your heart, and don't take everything so seriously," Mrs. Godfrey told People as her personal secret to living a long, fulfilling life.

Summing up the single greatest piece of wisdom gathered from an entire century of living, the centenarian offered a simple moral compass for others to carry forward: "Always be kind and spread love wherever you can."

With an unwavering spirit and a heart full of gratitude for the family that surrounds her, Mrs. Godfrey is not slowing down — affirming with a smile that she is already eagerly looking forward to "celebrating my 101st birthday."
