A caiman sporting what looks remarkably like a wig, a wild leopard performing an athletic handstand, a strutting white-tailed eagle and a polar bear appearing to share neighborhood gossip with a seagull: these are just a few of the comical scenes highlighted as the Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards officially unveiled its 2026 finalists.

The shortlist — featuring 40 individual finalists, three young talents in the Junior category, four standout portfolio entries and nine video finalists — was selected from a record-breaking pool of more than 10,000 entries submitted by photographers across 112 countries. From Diego Perez’s poised shot titled "Sexy Mantis" to split-second portraits of creatures caught off-guard, the collection celebrates the lighter, endearing side of the natural world while shining a spotlight on global habitat preservation.

Highlighting the purpose behind the laughs, competition co-founder Tom Sullam reflected on how a modest vision conceived in East Africa has blossomed into an international phenomenon.

"The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards started very gently, somewhere out on the vast plains of the Serengeti," Sullam said in a statement. "What began as a small effort to raise awareness of wildlife conservation has grown into something far bigger than we ever imagined. The competition is now truly global, and a decade or so on, we want to make it even bigger, funnier, and more far-reaching than ever. We use humour to get people to feel empathy towards wildlife, and it’s that empathy that creates behavioural change for the better."

A Mission Born in the Wild

The global contest was co-founded in 2015 by professional photographers Paul Joynson-Hicks and Sullam. Driven by decades of living and working in East Africa, the duo sought to establish a free, accessible platform combining world-class nature photography with good-natured wit, showing that humor can serve as one of the most powerful bridges between humanity and the animal kingdom.

Each year, the competition partners with a dedicated conservation charity to ensure its viral reach delivers real-world protection. For 2026, the awards are collaborating with the Born Free Foundation, an international initiative dedicated to rescuing wild animals from exploitation and securing threatened habitats for future generations, with the competition committing 10% of its net profits to support the cause.

Industry leaders have marveled at how the event continues to touch hearts across every continent.

"Nikon is proud to see the Comedy Wildlife Awards continue to grow in impact, with this year’s competition attracting more entries than ever before," said Stefan Maier, senior general manager of marketing at Nikon Europe. "With more than 10,000 hilarious and heartfelt images capturing the character and vibrancy of our natural world, the competition also pulls into focus the vital importance of conservation. Congratulations to all the finalists."

A Call for Everyday Laughter

Beyond the official verdicts, animal lovers everywhere are invited to take part in the festivities.

The People’s Choice Award, sponsored by STERNA, is officially open for public voting through March 1, 2027, giving voters worldwide a direct say in their favorite image — and entering one participant into a random drawing to win a 500-pound cash prize (roughly $650).

By transforming fleeting, unscripted animal behaviors into shared moments of joy, the annual competition gently reminds viewers that even the smallest creatures share in the vibrant comedy of life on Earth.

Reflecting on the deeper bond forged through these lighthearted glimpses, Sullam hopes that every smile inspires a lasting commitment to safeguard natural heritage, noting that "it's that empathy that creates behavioural change for the better."
