DOBBS FERRY- Officials in the Village of Dobbs Ferry are investigating an incident of a coyote biting a dog this week.

They say a resident walking a dog on Clinton Avenue on Wednesday, October 14 was approached from behind and the pet may have been bitten or nipped.

The interaction was not fully observed, but the village is treating it as a confirmed bite.

The village has a Coyote Operational Response Plan prompting this wild animal being classified as dangerous. That has prompted increased patrols in the Clinton Avenue area to actively monitor any further activity.

Officials said there are no indications currently that the coyote is sick, although its reported behavior presents a public safety concern and under village response protocols, police are authorized to shoot and kill the animal if encountered.

Residents, particularly in the Clinton Avenue area, are encouraged to take additional precautions with their pets. Keep dogs leashed and close when outdoors, especially during dawn, dusk and overnight hours. Cats should be kept indoors.

If your pet is bitten or scratched by a coyote, call your veterinarian and the Westchester County Department of Health at 914-813-5000.
