SOUTHEAST – A deputy sheriff patrolling along I-84 in Southeast clocked a vehicle speed by traveling at 130 mph in a 55-mph zone.

The deputy activated his vehicle’s lights and siren, but the suspect vehicle took off, said Sheriff Brian Hess.

The deputy began a pursuit but ended it because the fleeing vehicle posed a potential traffic hazard. He then alerted neighboring agencies, and New York State Police stopped the vehicle a short time later.

Charles Xavier Wells, 21, of Poughkeepsie was arrested on charges of Reckless Endangerment, Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle and Reckless Driving along with multiple vehicle and traffic law violations.

After arraignment, he was released without bail and is awaiting further court proceedings.
