CARMEL – Members of the Putnam County Legislature have limited their own salary increases to once every four years, capping the increase at the average consumer price index for the preceding four years.

The action that came at the nine-member governing body’s regular monthly meeting by unanimous vote, also removed a requirement that the county executive be Putnam’s highest-paid employee. It also limits the county executive to one pay increase every four-year term.

County lawmakers currently receive annual salaries of $48,173, while the chairperson receives an additional 25 percent stipend of $12,044.

The lawmakers’ decision is subject to a permissive referendum, meaning residents can collect signatures to put it on the 2027 ballot.
