DEERPRK- The Town of Deerpark has completed three cleanup efforts along a nearly three-mile stretch of New York State Route 97 at Hawks Nest Road, helping preserve the scenic beauty of the Upper Delaware River Valley.
The project was funded through a 2026 River and Shoreline Clean-up Grant from the Upper Delaware Council (UDC). The town’s final expense report totaled $2,010.22, covering highway crew labor, equipment, supplies, and disposal fees.
Town Highway Superintendent Raymond Cirulli and Highway Department Clerk Aimee Keane proposed the project in April, with the UDC approving it in May. The cleanups were scheduled following Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.
Crews removed roadside garbage along the stretch from the Deerpark town boundary to the Lumberland town line, including the popular Hawks Nest scenic overlooks. The winding roadway sits approximately 200 feet above the Delaware River and draws visitors for its panoramic views.
Since launching its River and Shoreline Clean-up Grant program in 2014, the UDC has awarded a total of $58,449.83 to member municipalities to help maintain the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River and its surrounding landscape.
The annual program is open to the council’s eight New York towns and five Pennsylvania townships. The UDC also organizes an annual Upper Delaware Litter Sweep each April to encourage community involvement in keeping the river valley clean.
