Twyla Dawson-Hollis’ ReRun Sneaker Drive

NYACK- A project that began as one student’s idea to help more children participate in sports has grown into a communitywide effort, collecting 195 pairs of sneakers and soccer cleats for children and families in need.

Twyla Dawson-Hollis, a junior at Green Meadow Waldorf School in Chestnut Ridge and a member of her school’s track team, launched the ReRun Sneaker Drive during her sophomore year.  The effort began at school last spring, collecting approximately 70 pairs of gently used athletic shoes before expanding into the surrounding community.

By the end of the expanded drive, Twyla had collected 195 pairs of sneakers and cleats with an estimated replacement value of more than $15,000.

“Athletics have always been a big part of my life. I’ve tried so many sports, and each one has taught me how to work with others and push through challenges,” Twyla said.  “I believe every kid should have the same opportunities that I did because I believe some of the most important lessons you learn come from being part of a team.”

To expand the drive, Twyla reached out to local businesses and civic organizations, established collection bins and signage, promoted ReRun at the Nyack Farmers Market and spoke to the Nyack Rotary Club.  Supporters included Nyack Vet, Bach to Rock Nanuet, School of Rock Rockland and the Nyack Chamber of Commerce.

Twyla partnered with Share Your Soles, a nonprofit that collects and distributes new and gently worn shoes to people in need around the world.  She and her family are now preparing to ship the donated footwear to the organization’s headquarters in Chicago for distribution.  A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help cover shipping costs.

Beyond the shoes collected, the project has helped Twyla build confidence and develop her public-speaking skills.

“It was really nice to see everybody support my project, not only at my school, but also within my community because it made me realize how many people want to help me and see me succeed,” she said.  “This experience really allowed me to work on my public speaking, which was something I previously struggled with.  Now, I feel much more confident talking with strangers and speaking in front of others.”

For Twyla, ReRun is about giving athletic shoes a second life while helping more children experience the teamwork, friendship and sense of belonging that sports can provide.
