Firefighters battled a large barn fire in Garrison

GARRISON- Firefighters from Putnam and Dutchess counties returned to quarters early Friday following a blaze that destroyed a large barn at an estate valued more than $1.5 million on Old Albany Post Road in Garrison.

Nine-one-one calls alerted the Garrison FD around 8 p.m. Thursday reporting the inferno and when Garrison FD Chief Fred Reich was enroute he requested mutual aid based on callers, bringing resources from the North Highlands FD, Cold Spring FD, Continental Village FD, Putnam Valley FD, Village of Fishkill FD, and Dutchess Junction FD in addition to members of the Garrison Volunteer Ambulance Corps, a Putnam-Empress Paramedic and the Putnam County Fire Investigation Team.

Putnam County Battalion 19 Coordinator Tom Merrigan was also on the scene.

Chief Reich said due to the intensity of the fire, crews deployed multiple hose lines in a defensive exterior attack extinguishing the blaze.

The barn housed no livestock or other animals and was used to store supplies and equipment.

There were no reported injuries.

Investigators determined that the fire began when the wood splitter’s hot exhaust manifold ignited nearby material about an hour after the homeowner had used the machine.

Reich said: “The heated exhaust manifold came in contact with wood chips and shavings igniting a fire which spread to a log pile waiting to be split and the fire then extended to the barn.”
