KINGSTON – The US Justice Department has granted the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office $794,000 as part of the Byrne Discretionary Community Projects Grants to improve the functioning of the criminal justice system.
Ulster will use the funds to modernize emergency communications, investigations, corrections, crisis response and field operations across the county.
The sheriff’s office will now be able to secure and implement next-generation 911 and phone system capabilities, secure a crisis intervention and overdose data platform, mobile device forensic technology, a handheld Raman-based drug identification device, camera and automated license plate reader infrastructure, and AI-supported report drafting.
Officials said this will result in safer drug identification, stronger crisis follow up, better correctional awareness and more coordinated countywide public safety operations.
“The historical prosecutions between the Ulster Regional Gang Enforcement Narcotics Team and the federal government have made Ulster County a safer place, and the new funding will ensure the safety for my community going forward,” said Sheriff Juan Figueroa.
