TOWN OF SOUTHEAST – Residents of the greater Brewster area will see no increase in town taxes next year if the Southeast Town Board approves Supervisor Joseph Castellano’s tentative 2027 budget.

The first term supervisor has presented his fiscal spending plan to the board Thursday describing the past few months as “extremely busy.”

The budget totals $10.8 million and includes $19.6 million in expenses and $8.8 million in revenue. The highway budget totals $4 million while special districts account for about $3.3 million, and the library will be allocated $679,000.

Castellano said: “Given the difficult times that we are facing, including the rising cost of fuel, home heating, electricity, and other day-to-day necessities, after speaking with department heads and employees of the Town of Southeast, I am proud to put forth a budget with a zero percent tax increase.”

The supervisor said his main goal was to develop a budget that came in below the state-mandated 2 percent property tax cap.

He credited substantial increases in mortgage tax revenue and Putnam’s sales-tax-revenue-sharing program that have aided in allowing him to present a budget that provides no tax increase for 2027.

A budget hearing will take place later this month allowing the public to ask questions about the fiscal expenditure.
