CARMEL – Carmel Police reported Monday that the driver of a Dodge Ram pickup was killed in a single-vehicle crash over the weekend in Carmel.
Authorities withheld the 56-year-old victim’s identity pending notification of next of kin.
An unidentified 44-year-old woman riding in the vehicle suffered severe trauma and was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center, where she was admitted in critical condition.
Police said the mishap took place late Friday night in the vicinity of Sunset Boulevard when the vehicle went out of control, overturned, and plummeted down the steep incline.
Nearby homeowners who heard the crash initially alerted authorities. Carmel Police arrived minutes later and confirmed that a single vehicle had left the roadway and gone down a steep embankment, trapping its two occupants.
Carmel Fire Department personnel responded along with the Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corps and two Empress Putnam paramedics.
Firefighters spent 45 minutes stabilizing the vehicle and extricating both occupants while EMS personnel treated them.
State Police and the Troop K Accident Reconstruction Unit also responded and are continuing to investigate the crash.
