CARMEL – Two people were seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash and taken to Westchester Medical Center after Carmel firefighters rappelled down a steep embankment off Route 6 to free them.
The mishap occurred late Friday night near Sunset Blvd., when the vehicle went out of control, overturned, and plummeted down the steep incline.
Nearby homeowners who heard the crash initially alerted authorities. Carmel Police arrived minutes later and confirmed that a single vehicle had left the roadway and gone down a steep embankment, trapping and seriously injuring its two occupants.
Carmel FD personnel responded along with the Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corps and two Empress Putnam paramedics.
Because of the severity of the crash, a medivac LifeNet helicopter was requested, and the Mahopac Fire Department assisted in establishing a landing zone for the medical chopper.
Carmel firefighters spent 45 minutes stabilizing the vehicle and freeing both occupants while EMS personnel provided patient care.
New York State Police were also summoned with the Troop K Accident Reconstruction Unit.
Troop K Public Information Officer Trooper Krystal Paolicelli told Saturday that the cause and circumstances remain under investigation.
Carmel Police has not released any information.
