PUTNAM COUNTY- For decades, heavy rainfall has caused flooding in communities across western Putnam County.
Now the villages of Cold Spring and Nelsonville in conjunction with the town of Philipstown have received a grant to complete a rainfall flooding vulnerability study and adaptation plan.
Officials in the three communities said the purpose of the study was to better understand where flooding occurs and its impacts, and to identify community-prioritized strategies to address flooding.
Cold Spring Mayor Kathleen Foley said the survey focuses on rainfall flooding, which happens when heavy rain overwhelms streambanks, riverbanks, and stormwater systems.
She added that rainfall flooding was different from coastal flooding, which occurs along the Hudson River waterfront during storms. Coastal flooding is outside the scope of this project.
The project area incorporates the Back Brook and Foundry Brook watersheds.
Paper copies of the survey are available at Cold Spring Village Hall on Main Street in Cold Spring.
