President Donald Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson and technology industry executives are scheduled to meet Tuesday for discussions on artificial intelligence as governments worldwide grapple with how to respond to the technology’s rapid development.
A source familiar with the planned gathering disclosed the meeting late Thursday. Additional details about its agenda, participating companies and expected outcomes were not immediately available.
The meeting comes as artificial intelligence increasingly occupies both domestic policy discussions and international competition.
Leading AI companies have publicly warned about potential risks to humanity from increasingly powerful systems and have called for governments to cooperate on managing those dangers.
Policymakers, meanwhile, have struggled to develop oversight frameworks at the same pace that AI capabilities are advancing.
The United States and China, the world’s two leading powers in artificial intelligence development, have pursued notably different regulatory approaches.
China has established rules governing areas including AI algorithms and the data used to train systems. Its regulations also require AI-generated material to be clearly identified.
Trump has resisted calls for a new regulatory structure specifically designed for artificial intelligence, arguing that the United States does not need additional AI-specific rules.
He reinforced that position Tuesday in remarks before world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly, where he rejected the prospect of an international framework that would place broader controls over the technology.
Trump said he “rejects any attempt to construct a globalist scheme to control” AI.
The president described artificial intelligence as an extraordinary technology while saying the United States would proceed carefully as its capabilities continue to develop.
Tuesday’s planned gathering with Johnson and technology executives will bring senior political leaders and industry representatives together as the United States considers how to maintain its position in the global AI race while addressing concerns surrounding the technology’s growing power.
The meeting was first reported by Axios.
