HAMBURG, Germany — A 27-year-old Gambian national was arrested Tuesday, Nov. 3, after walking into a Hamburg police station and leading officers to an apartment where they discovered the body of a 70-year-old woman who had suffered fatal injuries, according to German authorities.
The suspect appeared at Police Station 23 on Troplowitz Straße at approximately 3:30 p.m., initially telling officers he wanted to report a bodily injury. He then accompanied police to a nearby apartment building on Grandweg in the Lokstedt district, where he unexpectedly informed them that someone was dead inside.
Officers entered the second-floor apartment and discovered the woman’s body. The Hamburg Police Department’s official statement, released Tuesday evening, confirmed that the victim had sustained fatal injuries but did not publicly describe their precise nature.
Police immediately detained the Gambian national on suspicion of a homicide offense and transported him back to the station.
The department’s homicide division, identified as LKA 41, and prosecutors specializing in capital crimes assumed responsibility for the investigation.
Early coverage by German news organizations described particularly severe injuries to the victim.
The Hamburger Morgenpost reported that the woman’s body displayed evidence of extreme violence. The newspaper also reported that her head had been severed.
Similarly, T-online reported, citing information from Hamburger Abendblatt and Morgenpost, that the victim’s head had been separated from her body.
However, police subsequently disputed that description.
According to Norddeutscher Rundfunk’s Nov. 4 reporting, a Hamburg police spokesperson specifically denied the initial reports that the woman had been decapitated.
The conflicting accounts mean the precise nature of the victim’s injuries has not been independently established in the publicly available police information.
Investigators identified the deceased woman as 70 years old and said they believed she and the detained man were acquainted before the incident.
Police also reported indications that the suspect may have a psychiatric illness. Authorities have not publicly established whether any medical condition contributed to the alleged offense.
The man was subsequently placed in pretrial detention on strong suspicion of manslaughter under German law.
German authorities distinguish between murder and manslaughter according to specific legal criteria, including the circumstances and motivations associated with the killing.
The suspect’s identity has not been publicly released, and police have not disclosed the victim’s name.
Investigators have also not established a publicly confirmed motive or provided a detailed account of the events inside the apartment before officers arrived.
Police spokesman Sören Zimbal confirmed the initial discovery and the involvement of homicide investigators, while forensic personnel examined the apartment for evidence.
The investigation remains focused on determining the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death, the suspect’s relationship with her and the events preceding his appearance at the police station.
As of Nov. 6, the 27-year-old Gambian national remained the subject of the homicide investigation, with German authorities confirming his detention but disputing the most graphic descriptions circulated in initial media reports.
