NEWBURGH – The Newburgh City Council Monday night is expected to terminate its contractual relationship with Flock Safety for use of its automated license plate recognition technology.

City residents and several council members believe the system poses a risk to city residents in terms of potential use of information gathered by federal agencies.

A resolution pulling the plug on the program when the current contract expires at the end of the year says the technology “is no longer consistent with the city’s policy priorities regarding privacy, civil liberties, public accountability and community trust.”

City attorney Michele Kelson said a number of steps must be taken to terminate the contract and protect the existing data collected.

“There are tasks that the council will have to undertake, tasks that the city manager, corporation counsel, and the police chief will have to take, but I just need a green light from (councilmembers) that this will meet all of your concerns,” she told the council during Thursday night’s workshop session.

Should the city council approve the resolution, it would stop using the system through the remainder of this year.
