HUGUENOT- An 18-year-old female bicyclist sustained serious injuries as a result of being struck by a truck while traveling on Route 209 in the Town of Deerpark on Saturday, September 19. State troopers responded to US Route 209 after receiving a report of a crash between a motor vehicle and a bicycle at about 8:51 p.m.
A preliminary investigation determined that a Chevrolet pickup truck being driven by a 54-year-old Port Jervis resident was traveling north on US 209 when he struck the female bicyclist who was traveling southbound in the same lane.
The injured bicyclist was transported by helicopter to Westchester Medical Center, where she was listed in stable condition.
The injured woman’s mother stated that her daughter is to undergo surgery on Wednesday for extensive injuries she sustained. This, she said, includes a skull fracture, broken jawbone, hand, and shoulder, both cheekbones, eye sockets, and sinuses, loss of her teeth, and a compound fracture and severe cut to her forearm. This, as explained to the family, will require complete facial reconstruction with risk of permanent or temporary loss of eyesight and future facial movements.
“She does have an incredibly hard road ahead, but I’m hopeful for her,” her mother told on Monday afternoon.
As they move forward on this tough road, the mother expressed gratitude to those who have helped her daughter in any way. Many in the community have reached out to inquire as to her status and to offer prayers for her recovery.
“I am incredibly grateful for those who stayed with her, helped in any way possible, and the paramedics/state troopers and officers,” she said.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
