MONTICELLO – Sullivan County has a population of over 80,000 people, according to the US Census Bureau, and in the last four months, there have been eight suicides.
County Coroner Albee Bochman finds that statistic to be alarming.
“Although the overdoses in the county have decreased substantially since the beginning of the year, there has been a notable increase in the number of suicides,” he said. “Excluding this month, the past three months, not including this month, we had six suicides in Sullivan County, and this month we had two more. So, in four months’ time, you’re looking at eight suicides for a number of different reasons, whether it is drug related or mental health.”
Bochman told county legislators that he will present them with a strategy in an effort to address that issue.
