POUGHKEEPSIE – Marist University will cap the combined cost of tuition, housing and dining at $32,000 a year for eligible New York students beginning in 2027, the university announced this week.

The Empire State Promise will be available to new first-year and transfer students who are New York residents and come from households with an adjusted gross income of $200,000 or less.

The program is designed to make the cost of attending the private university more comparable to that of New York’s public universities.

Students must enroll full time, submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid by required deadlines and meet academic and other program requirements. The benefit can be renewed for up to four years.

“Talented students should be able to choose a university based on opportunity and outcomes, without being constrained by assumptions about cost,” Marist President Kevin Weinman said.

Marist said it distributes about $115 million in financial aid annually, with 99% of incoming first-year students receiving scholarships or grants.

Students in the program will have access to Marist’s academic programs, internships, career preparation, study abroad opportunities and other university offerings.

The university said 94% of graduates are employed or enrolled in graduate school within six months of graduation.

The announcement comes as Marist continues investments in its academic programs, including a $100 million Science and Health Initiative and a university wide artificial intelligence strategy.

The Empire State Promise will apply to students entering Marist in 2027. Full eligibility requirements are available through the university.
