KINGSTON – Emergency responders, elected officials and members of the public gathered Friday morning for the annual 9/11 commemoration at Firemen’s Park in the city’s uptown district.

Twenty-five years ago two hijacked jetliners destroyed both towers of the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan as another crashed into the Pentagon and another crashed into a field in southwestern Pennsylvania.

Nearly 3,000 people perished in the terrorist attacks, including 441 emergency responders, 443 of which were firemen and many of who died in the collapsing towers of the World Trade Center.

“The fire service made it known it will never forget what happened,” said Kingston Fire Chief Chris Rea. “We’re going to respect the firefighters, the police officers, the EMS people, for doing their jobs and putting their lives on the line. We won’t forget, we do not forget, we come here every year.”
