MAHOPAC – Members of the McDonald’s Breakfast Club cheered Thursday when celebrating the 100th birthday of George Mezzone.

George, who resides in Mahopac, was presented with a cake by Dr. Joy Carlos Wong, who along with his brother, Victor, are proprietors of the fast-food restaurant, and who originated the club in 2020 when they first honored a regular customer who had passed away.

The club continues to grow and each morning groups gather for coffee, a bite to eat and to catch up.

Joy Wong said he has looked to foster a sense of community in all his restaurants, which in turn has led to many employees working with him for the past 20-plus years. He organizes and celebrates holidays with his employees and customers alike. Wong gives back to his community regularly donating to local hospitals, schools, and churches.

The entrepreneur is also a licensed physician who provides medical care to underserved communities during visits to Mexico.

Mezzone was touched by the celebration.

“Dr. Wong and his brother are the ‘best of the best.’ We gather every day except for Sunday and enjoy each other’s company and the Wong’s hospitality. The men are saints,” said the birthday boy.

When asked about the success for long life, Mezzone replied, “Have a clean life and a great family.”

Breakfast club members congratulated the centenarian.

“George is funny and witty,” said Susan Dowling.

Richard Cassaboom recalled Mezzone’s favorite saying: ’Life is 10 percent what you make of it and 90 percent of how you take it.’ George is filled with wisdom. Each of us looks up to him. He is very special.”

County Executive Kevin Byrne led a list of dignitaries to the party.

Byrne congratulated the World War II Navy veteran for raising a beautiful family and volunteering with the MS Society for many years.

Mezzone’s daughters, Georgina and Susan, accompanied their dad to the gathering, along with many members of the Mahopac McDonald’s staff.

Wong summed up the occasion, saying, “Giving back to our community is a truly fulfilling experience. Seeing everyone happy and enjoying the festivities fills my soul with joy.”
