CARMEL – Ten years ago, the Putnam County 9/11 Memorial Committee expanded the county’s monument located at Cornerstone Park in Carmel to include the names of those who passed away as a result of their efforts in the rescue and recovery at the World Trade Center.
The expansion accommodated 24 names.
Denis Hanrahan, who coordinates the ceremony each September 11 that attracts hundreds to the county seat, reflected Wednesday. “At that time, it was thought we would never reach that number, Sadly, we have surpassed that and we have been forced to expand the memorial as a testament to our community resilience and unity.”
Funds were raised to expand the sacred space and permanently honor Putnam’s fallen heroes and crews have enlarged the monument in time for Friday evening’s ceremony.
Joining those killed on 9/11, Firefighters Christopher Blackwell, George Cain, Daniel Harlin, Thomas Kuveikas and Robert Minara along with Officer Stephen Driscoll and financers David Lawrence William Fodor and George Paris along with the 18 who have died since 9-11 are seven others whose names have been added to the monument: Lt. Joseph Cody of the FDNY; Firefighter Kenneth Holler of the FDNY; Lt. Anthony Garvey of the NYPD; Putnam County Sheriff and MTA Police Chief Kevin McConville; Chief Ron Goodrow of the Mahopac FD; Sgt.
