POUGHKEEPSIE – The City of Poughkeepsie ceremoniously swore in three new police officers on Wednesday morning, in front of the new hires’ friends and family.  Two of the newest recruits will begin the police academy hosted by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office on Monday, while the third, a Poughkeepsie native, is a lateral hire from the NYPD and will begin field training next week.

Tyrus Scott and Conor Slocum will begin the extensive police academy for six months, beginning next week.  After completing the academy in March 2027, the pair will begin training on departmental procedures within the Poughkeepsie Police Department, Chief Rich Wilson told .  Officer Choaib Hadine, a two-year NYPD veteran who transferred to the police department in his hometown, will begin field training on department-specific procedures next week.

Mayor Yvonne Flowers welcomed the new recruits and their families to Poughkeepsie, saying, “Thank you for choosing the City of Poughkeepsie.  We appreciate that you want to get involved and be a part of our community.”  Police Chief Rich Wilson also welcomed the new hires who bring the department to 86 sworn officers, just shy of the contractual full-force staffing level.

Chief Wilson, a decades-long member of the department, also addressed the role that recruits’ family members play in the police department.

“I want to thank you for supporting these new hires,” Wilson told the audience.  “The department works to keep our members safe and in the right mindset eight hours a day.  For the remaining 16 hours of each day, officers are with their families.  The support they receive at home is vital to their well-being, and I thank you for the sacrifices you will make and the support you provide.”
