LIBERTY – A bat has tested positive for rabies in Sullivan County. This time, the animal was found in the Grahamsville area in the Town of Neversink.

Last week, a bat tested positive for the deadly virus in Livingston Manor.

The county health department said bat exposures can sometimes be difficult to recognize because their teeth are very small, and a bite or scratch may not be readily apparent.

Anyone who has had direct contact with a bat, wakes up to find a bat in the room where they were sleeping, or discovers a bat in a situation where contact cannot be reliably ruled out should contact the health department for guidance.

Anyone who has been bitten, scratched, or may have had contact with a bat o0r other potentially rabid animal should wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and water and contact the county health department at 845-292-5910.

Remember rabies is a fatal virus if not treated.
