MIDDLETOWN – It could months longer than expected to complete the Middletown parking garage across South Street from the Paramount Theater since cracks have been discovered in the precast concrete deck.

City Public Works Commissioner Jacob Tawil said engineers have determined there is no danger, but the city is rejecting the slabs because of the cracks.

“There is no danger of anything collapsing, there is no danger of structural things to the best of our knowledge,” Tawill said. “Our engineers, myself, their engineers said there are no structural issues; however, there are so cracks we are not happy with, and we believe we should not accept this product as it is.”

The city is hoping the two-tiered deck will be completed by the end of the year.
