MID-HUDSON – Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is considered to be the unofficial end of summer with barbecues, swimming, and shopping. It is also meant to be a national holiday set aside to honor the efforts of American labor throughout the years.
Todd Diorio of Marlboro is business manager of Laborers Local 17 and president of the Hudson Valley Construction Trades Council, and he said the trades, like other areas of the labor force, are doing very well.
“The trades have been full bore this past season. It has been really busy, and we have some future projects coming up that are large; we have Amazon, we have Walmart, we have the IBM project in Poughkeepsie, it’s a good time to be in the trades,” he said.
Labor Day was first recognized as a holiday in Oregon in 1887, with other states supporting the day before it became a federal holiday in 1894.
