WESTCHESTER- More than 600 local students will head into the new school year with new backpacks, thanks to a back-to-school effort led by New York State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D, Yonkers).
Backpacks were distributed to students and families in Yonkers, Greenburgh and Mount Pleasant through a network of local organizations and community partners.
Among the groups participating were the Yonkers YWCA, Westchester EOC, Family Service Society of Yonkers, Family Ties, Theodore D. Young Community Center and St. Teresa of Avila Church, along with other community organizations.
The donations are being used at back-to-school events and resource fairs throughout the district, where families can receive school supplies and information about other resources available to them.
“Every child deserves to begin the school year with the tools they need to feel prepared and confident,” Stewart-Cousins said. She thanked the community organizations and volunteers involved, as well as MSG Entertainment, the Hispanic Federation and Melissa Hillard for their partnership.
“I wish all of our students a successful and exciting school year ahead,” she said.
