KINGSTON – The Ulster County Legislature is planning a series of listening sessions with local business owners and community organizations as it considers a proposed law that would change how certain county taxes are collected.
The Legislature announced the sessions in partnership with Ulster Strong and other community organizations and stakeholders. Officials said the meetings are intended to gather input on the proposed Ulster County Fair Taxes Act before any final decisions are made. The proposed plan has been criticized by Republicans.
“Our local business owners drive Ulster County’s economy, and hearing directly from them is vital,” Legislature Chair Peter Criswell, District 7, said.
Minority Leader Kevin Roberts, District 12, said business owners have raised concerns about the proposed tax’s language and structure.
“It is imperative that we continue to truly listen to them and understand how this will have a real impact on their livelihoods and those of their employees and families,” Roberts said.
The first three sessions are scheduled for 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the following locations:
- Kingston/Ulster area: Sept. 16, The Carriage House at Hutton Brickyards Riverfront Hotel & Venue, 132 Lindsley Ave., Kingston.
- Ellenville/Wawarsing area: Sept. 30, Shadowland Stages, 157 Canal St., Ellenville.
- Saugerties/Woodstock area: Oct. 14, Elna Magnetics, 203 Malden Turnpike, Saugerties.
Additional sessions are expected to be announced.
