CARMEL – With the war in Iran raging on and the price of a barrel of oil nearing the century mark, fuel prices throughout the Hudson Valley continue to surpass $4 per gallon.

Motorists in Putnam County are now receiving a minimal break in the price of fuel thanks to county government which has suspended the county sales tax on every gallon of gasoline over $3.

The cap will remain in effect for the final four months of 2026 and all of 2027.

County Executive Kevin Byrne said on Thursday that “We can’t control global markets, but we can control what we do here. Fill up and keep more of your money in Putnam County.”

Byrne also called on the state to “follow our lead.”
