POUGHKEEPSIE – In the wake of the death of Poughkeepsie school crossing guard James Montanino on September 29, 2025, State Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson (D, Newburgh) passed legislation for traffic safety.
The measures are aimed at protecting children and others walking to schools in the city.
“The first bill sets up speed zones and it allows three areas near schools to allow these speed zones and cameras would be set up,” he said. The second bill concerns reckless driving in general is that the City of Poughkeepsie would be allowed to put in nine red light cameras in different intersections.
Jacobson discussed the issues with Mayor Yvonne Flowers to make the streets safer. She called the legislation “a critical step” toward that goal.
The legislation was carried in the Senate by Rob Rolison (R, Poughkeepsie).
