KINGSTON – Ulster County currently has a ban on plastic straws, but it is exploring expanding plastics bans to other items.

The legislature’s Beyond Plastics Working Group, meeting on Wednesday, began exploring further restrictions on plastics, said Legislator Chris Hewitt.

“We talked about banning straws and stirrers, which would then make the ‘skip the stuff’ ordinance moot, if we were just banning plastic straws and stirrers,” he said. The ban to be explored is produce bags in the ’bring your own bag act’.”

The current ‘skip the stuff’ law requires that restaurants provide customers with condiment packets and cutlery only upon request.
