GOSHEN – The freeze on Orange County sales tax on gasoline purchases over $2 per gallon took effect on Tuesday, September 1.

The tax amnesty was aimed at providing a little relief to the driving public as gas prices shot up dramatically earlier this year.

County Legislator Steven Hunter sponsored the resolution to freeze the local tax.

“We wanted to make sure that we weren’t gouging our residents based on these prices nobody ever expected them to be as high as they have been for the entire year,” he said.

Other area counties have also enacted similar legislation that will save the motorist about a dollar or two per fill up.
