MID-HUDSON – School officials throughout the region are reminding parents of children returning to school this week that all public-school students will receive free breakfast and lunch in the upcoming school year.
The universal free school meals program was included in the state’s budget and will benefit over 2.7 million students. Parents will not need to apply or submit any documentation, as all students are eligible regardless of income.
Governor Kathy Hochul said the plan addresses food insecurity while supporting families, potentially saving them an estimated $165 per child per month on groceries.
“The program aims to ensure every student has access to nutritious meals, contributing to better academic performance and overall well-being,” she said.
Carmel School District Director of Food Services Anne Pantoja reminded the public that all children will now dine for free.
