CARMEL- Roads throughout Putnam County resembled the Long Island Expressway during rush hour Friday due to construction, utility crews, and traffic mishaps.

Downtown Carmel was a parking lot for most of the day as contractors paved Fair Street in the vicinity of Carmel High School, Carmel Post Office and Route 52 intersection.

With school opening for the 2026-27 school year next week, the county hopes to have the year’s long project finally completed prior to the sound of the first school bell.

Unfortunately, orientation for incoming freshmen was held Friday resulting in school buses worsening the nightmare that backed up traffic along Routes 6 and 52 in addition to Fair Street.

Meanwhile, NYSEG crews caused torment for motorists on Routes 312 and Route 6 in Southeast in the vicinity of the Tilly Foster Farm. The utility workers installed underground cables necessitating the temporary closure of lanes of traffic for most of the day.

Vehicles were backed up onto Route 6 as well as I-84.

Western Putnam was not immune either since crashes on Routes 9 and 9D in Cold Spring and the Taconic State Parkway in Putnam Valley snarled traffic for hours.
